On July 31, 2015, President Obama signed into law the “Surface Transportation and Veterans Health Care Choice Improvement Act of 2015”. Although primarily designed as a three-month stopgap extension of the Highway Trust Fund, the Act includes a number of important tax provisions, including revised due dates for partnerships and C corporation returns and revised extended due dates for many other returns.

Department of Labor Says Most Contractors Are Actually Employees

A recent move by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) could have far-reaching implications for businesses that hire contractors. Traditionally, such workers were not considered employees under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore not entitled to Social Security, Medicare, the Family and Medical Leave Act or health care under the Affordable Care Act. Now the Administration’s initiative to broaden the definition of “employee” is getting some support from the U.S. Supreme Court.

Georgians awaiting a sales tax holiday for savings on school supplies, computers or software or even clothing, can begin to set their clocks, as the next holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on July 31. It will conclude at midnight on August 1.
