Find the Coaching in Criticism

Posted by molive on May 5, 2014 2:11:17 PM

As our careers progress, we are exposed to varying degrees of feedback and criticism – constructive and otherwise. Feedback and even criticism is important. As the article provided in the link below says, feedback “improves performance, develops talent, aligns expectations, solves problems, guides promotion and pay and boosts the bottom line.” For something that does so much, it’s important to not only learn how to give it, but to receive it.

“Finding the Coaching in Criticism”, a Harvard Business Review article provides six steps toward becoming a better receiver of feedback.

They are:

1. Know your tendencies
2. Disentangle the “what” from the “who”
3. Sort toward coaching
4. Unpack the feedback
5. Ask for just one thing
6. Engage in small experiments

Take a look at these recommendations in this article and see how they might help you become a better receiver of feedback.
