Georgia’s Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) — a reading of economic activity in the state’s manufacturing sector — decreased by 4.4 points in December, to 55.6 but remains above the national and southeast averages. The national PMI rises, finishing the year with its highest reading of 2016. Manufacturing continues to expand as the economy moves into the New Year.

According to Don Sabbarese, Professor of Economics at Kennesaw State University, "The August report show that the rise in Georgia new orders and production rise to offset decreases in employment, supplier delivery time, and finished inventory." Areas with the largest decrease include employment; down 12.7 points, and production; down 9.6 points. According to Don Sabbarese, Professor of Economics at Kennesaw State University, "Both the Georgia and National PMIs increased. The National PMI moved above 50 for the first time since October 2015. Georgia's PMI will continue to demonstrate growth for its manufacturing sector. However, its current high levels may not be sustainable."
